Winter News

As the year comes to a close and we have completed our touring for 2015, I am still holding images of Florida in my head! That’s a good thing, as I have returned to the winter of the Northeast. For this last southern swing we were joined by my buddy Jay Stollman, one bad ass singer and super fun cat! We worked our way along with Don Castagno on drums and Scott Spray on bass, through Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, and then had the pleasure of performing 5 shows in Florida. I was more than ready to enjoy all of Florida’s perks such as warm air, sunshine, tropical breezes, plants and wildlife, and some pool time, and I thoroughly soaked it all up. We did have a fair amount of rain for our two outdoor shows at Earl’s Hideway in Sebastian and Guanabanas in Jupiter, but in true Florida style we played through it all and the folks were there to hang!
Happily, we established that audiences really dig the combination of both Jay and I out front with the band backing us on our own tunes and some really cool duets. This is really exciting because besides pursuing our solo careers, Jay and I are poised to present this package for 2016 tours!
A special honor for us was performing on the air for Blues Radio International hosted by Jesse Finkelstein. Jesse recorded our little unplugged performance for both audio and video. I’ve already got one of the tunes posted at my face book pages. Did I mention that Jay and I have a face book page together too?
It seems like one has to have a lot of irons in the fire these days to keep working. As the number of venues presenting blues around the country continues to shrink, and the style of blues that the younger audiences are into is closer to rock music, it is wise to be eclectic these days. I think this makes my collaboration with Jay kind of perfect timing as he is a high energy, soul/rocker! Myself, I grew up on so much great blues based music, rock ’n roll, soul and R’nB, that I am always happy to cover a lot of musical ground.
I have high hopes for 2016 and I hope you will all come out when the shows are near you! Right now I will wind down for the winter and go into woodshed mode. I do feel a writing jag coming on and I think I will pick away at writing my book again…lord knows I have no shortage of road stories and follies!
As my mom continues to age, I am very anxious to be with her through the holiday season and assess her health. I know there is so much I will be able to do for her, so I will head out to CA again this winter. This is a win-win for me and my mom as I get to avoid the cold back here in the northeast! Expect to find me playing some shows out there too. We’ll keep ya posted at the website and the facebook fan page.
If you are into having a very bluesy Christmas, check out this tune I recorded for a Christmas CD released on Cleopatra Records: It’s called BLUES CHRISTMAS, (who woulda thunk!) and my track is “Boogie Woogie Santa.” Enjoy. PEACE, Deb

Love Spin

deb_2015Well, I gotta be honest…I’m really proud of this CD.  I actually dig listening to it, which is saying a lot.  Often times I need to take a big break from my records for quite a while after I record them.  But I guess I just wrote and played what I like, with musicians that I love, and it feels good to me!  I didn’t belabor my solos in the studio…I can hear all kinds of imperfections, but it’s real, and it’s in the moment.

My biggest joy in life is collaborating with other musicians who are both friends and gifted artists.  I’ve been blessed to do that throughout my career so many times!  Once again the honor came upon me when my buddy Terry Hanck said “yes” and joined me on a couple of tunes where we could both spar vocally in a duet, and swap licks on our axes.  Terry’s a quadruple threat as a killer singer, song writer, sax player, and performer!! Thanks man!

Being in a saxxy mood I also invited my long time pal Dana Robbins to join me on the record.  Dana and I have stayed in touch since our days back in the early ‘80s when we toured behind John Mayall in Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs.  Both of us have never stopped, and today Dana tours and kicks butt on sax with the great Delbert McClinton.  Do we plan to do upcoming shows together?  You bet!  Can’t wait!!

Dave Keyes has joined me many times on stage when we’ve augmented the trio for various shows and festivals.  He and I have done tons of blues cruises together, so he was a natural choice when LOVE SPIN called for some piano!

For those of you who were looking forward to hearing Candye Kane and Laura Chavez on my CD, well, so was I.  Unfortunately Candye was severely ill and in the hospital during the recording time.  We were all so disappointed, but happily, she has just completed a major tour of Europe.!  Bless you my sister!

I met Jay Stollman through Johnny Winter, and after Johnny’s passing , we both ended up performing with the Johnny Winter Remembrance Show.  Jay asked me to co-produce his  CD for him during the summer of 2014 and then I invited him to join me in a another duet on LOVE SPIN.  This time it was an R’nB number, “Don’t Change It Up,” written by Don Castagno.  Jay’s got an amazing soul/rock voice so I also invited Scott Spray, Johnny’s long time bass player, to join us on that tune and put some ‘stank’ on the bottom!  Since then, Scott has received a Grammy award for his contribution to Johnny Winter’s “Down and Dirty”  CD, with his song, “I’M A BLUES MAN.”  Heck yea we got some chemistry goin’ on!  Look for special live shows  to come!

Once more I employed the multi talented Paul Opalach to turn his studio into our love nest for LOVE SPIN!  Yes, sometimes we would laugh, feel very inspired, and sometimes butt heads; and in the end it all turned into another record!  Paul is always a master at the board, and as always, you will hear him on several instruments…slide, bass, and organ! I never go wrong at Long Hill Recording Studios.

Lastly, I couldn’t have made this record without the help of all of my friends and fans who pre-ordered and donated to the on-line fundraiser for Love Spin.  From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.  Now please give LOVE SPIN  a spin!    Debbie Davies
